Nigerian scams and the decline of research has just been updated, with an AMAZING sting operation. A reporter for Science submitted a terrible paper to several hundred open access, "peer reviewed" publishers. Many accepted it -- for fees authors pay -- and some of them were big names (e.g., Elsevier). Beware of the scams, but high five for the ethical publishers like PLoS.
