What's a (recent) great idea that did NOT originate in the "West"?

M-Pesa, e.g., allows people to carry and transfer money with their phones. It originated in Kenya.


  1. Micro-credit! Grameen Bank started by Mohd Yunus is an amazing concept.

  2. Ushahidi (www.ushahidi.com/about-us-) a crowdsourcing tool originally used to map incidents of violence following Kenya's 2007 elections. Since then it's been applied in Haiti, Japan - following the earthquakes, Chile, DR of Congo, Gulf coast following the 2010 oil spill etc.

  3. An idea that did not originate in the west… Cooperative Water Management. Utilizing consensus and grassroots efforts to equitably manage water.
