Question of the week

What's a (recent) great idea that did NOT originate in the "West"?

M-Pesa, e.g., allows people to carry and transfer money with their phones. It originated in Kenya.

  1. Micro-credit! Grameen Bank started by Mohd Yunus is an amazing concept.

  2. Ushahidi (www.ushahidi.com/about-us-) a crowdsourcing tool originally used to map incidents of violence following Kenya's 2007 elections. Since then it's been applied in Haiti, Japan - following the earthquakes, Chile, DR of Congo, Gulf coast following the 2010 oil spill etc.
Erik Hersman a co-founder of Ushahidi runs a website that keeps up with African Innovations: http://whiteafrican.com/

  3. An idea that did not originate in the west… Cooperative Water Management. Utilizing consensus and grassroots efforts to equitably manage water.

  4. Here's a brand new idea (nothing to do with water though) :-)

  5. Here's one: http://www.ted.com/talks/ludwick_marishane_a_bath_without_water.html
