GIO: Food-Energy-Water

Question 12: How do we understand the food-energy-water nexus? (Water is used to produce energy, energy to produce fresh water, both are used to produce food, and all three are used to produce biofuels.)

  1. Gathering information to teach at a seminar for 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, I tested several water footprint calculators. Results were similar on all of them, with the highest water consumption due to consuming meat and dairy products. Even though I practice every conceivable indoor and outdoor water conservation practice known, my water footprint remains high from my love of chicken, beef, and dairy products. A similar bump occurs for the exact same reason in my carbon footprint. Oh great. More guilt.
